People who are setting up a website and/or blog OR who are seeking a more user-friendly way to create and maintain a website. Often ask about the difference between these two platforms that share the same name but not the same ending…. What’s the difference?

Well, there is a significant difference between the two – particularly if you want your website and/or blog to be a marketing tool for your business or if you want to set up an online business.

Christina Hills has posted a great video and will be hosting a free Q&A webinar this evening just to address this question.

Posted by: Eileen | Comments (0)

The beauty of the internet is that as we surf the net we find wonderful gold nuggets on other websites. A good example is the current video.  (Thank you Christina Hills at the Website Creation Workshop http://bit.ly/EnjoyBeingOnlineWCWJC for posting this great video.)

In this video, Seth Godwin and Tom Peters share why they blog.  They explain that  blogging helps you to clarify your ideas and thoughts as you put fingers to keyboard and explain in a few paragraphs your take on an idea or issue. Enjoy!

Why Get On The Social Media?

Posted by: Eileen | Comments (0)

Are you on Facebook? Do you have a Twitter account or accounts? Are you part of the Social Media Revolution?

Like it or not, things are changing…. are we part of that change in how we relate to one another or are we holding on to what went before? Are we in touch with the present radial shift in communications or are we burying our heads hoping it will all go away and peole will stop inviting us to become “friends” on Facebook?

Talking to a friend of mine today, I was rather surprised to discover that not only is she not on Facebook or Twitter – she’s not even interested!  “I like to write to people individually or phone them!” she told me, “Why should I write something that everyone can read?”

She has a point. That is the way we used to do it and we feel comfortable with that. In “the good ol’ days” we were communicating person to person or face to face. And these tools: emailing, phoning (ah, letter writing – when was the last time you wrote a letter???) still have their purpose. But what I have found is that Facebook, and Twitter in particular, as well as the other social media give me, an individual, the opportunity to communicate through broadcasting.

(Remember only radio, TV, and newspapers used to be able to broadcast, that is, go from one source or font to many listeners, viewers, readers.)

However, now, we individuals, can each “broadcast” our news with all those who follow us AND these records of our messages, especially on Twitter, go online and become accessible to all who search on the internet!  I really find this mind-blowing! We are no longer “islands” inhabitating our own tiny patch of Mother Earth – With the social media we can now network with thousands of people all over the world – basically all at the same time!

(However, the dynamics of building a relationship, getting to know the person or people we are communicating with, doesn’t change.)

Personally, I can’t see how anyone can not be on the social media!

Perhaps you’re thinking that this is just a fad and it will pass away soon as other fads have.

Interestingly, I found a tweet (a short message on Twitter) today from one of the people I follow,
Cindy King, on Twitter about this very topic.

Her link led to a video by Erik Qualman called “The Social Media Revolution”.

I found it a very thought-provoking video.

Take a look at it and then post your thoughts in the comment box. Let’s talk!

Getting Back online…

Posted by: Eileen | Comments (0)

My accident and especially the unexpected death of my father really hit me really hard.

But life goes on and that includes work, friends, facebooking, tweeting and blogging….

So back to the computer keys….

Talk soon!

I’ve heard about software applications that allow folks to connect their blog posts to their Facebook account to their Twitter accounts and other social media.

These applications are a great idea as it can be quite time-consuming writing for these various accounts. And at the moment, I feel a bit in overwhelm as I am trying to post or tweet on these various accounts, as well as stay up-to-date on what others are writing AND keep abreast of new trends, videos, etc. …and have a life and job besides!

Today on Twitter, I noticed various “peeps” were using TweetDeck and Twhirl… So I checked them out.

I read the FAQs and Help on Twhirl and TweetDeck.  TweetDeck wins hands down, in my opinion. So, I downloaded it to give it test-drive.

I like the layout and user-friendliness of TweetDeck. The instructions I found non-techy friendly, that is, written in easy to understand language… and the layout of the page very visual and easy to use.  I also like the little ‘ping’ that lets me know someone else has tweeted… It also connects to Facebook so I can use one interface for both Twitter and Facebook.

However, on the downside, I haven’t yet found a way on TweetDeck to post-date my tweets or posts to Twitter or Facebook; nor can I connect to my blogs from TwitterDeck….

Twhirl offers a wider selection of social media networks, but it does not seem either to have a connection to one’s blog….

Do any of you know of a software application that would allow me to connect to a number of social medial as well as connecting to my blogs? Post a comment and let me know…. Thanks!

Blogging-On-The-Go!

Posted by: Eileen | Comments (0)

Just got a netbook! My good old laptop was acting up and for a long time it was too heavy for me to carry with me.  So even before my accident, I had been looking around trying to get to know what was available.  I had lots of questions: were the keys on the keyboard big enough for my fingers? would I be able to read what was written on that tiny screen? Could I really find something light enough to carry with me? And equally important, would I be able to download the Juicer 3 and then use my Digital Juice products on it? (I love my Juice!)

I decided that to be able to run the programs I wanted and do the things I wanted to do with it…. I would need one which had a Dual Core 2 Duo processor.

Hmmm, until I priced those babies…. hmmm…. a bit too high for my pocketbook…

Then a week ago, as I was travelling on the train that runs from Fumicino International airport to Rome, I was sitting in front of a woman who was working on her lovely little netbook. I grabbed the opportunity to start asking her my questions, as well as query her on prices.

Based on her info, I was able to find this little gem I’m using now. No, it’s not one of the super processors, but I think it’ll do the trick…. I’ll let you know.

And you, do you use a netbook? What’s your opinion of it? Let me know….

Social Media is A Party!

Posted by: Eileen | Comments (0)

Christina Hills in her Website Creation Workshop course has a lot of great videos on a variety of topics that deal with getting a great Word Press site up & running. Among her own videos on the practical ways to include social media on a WordPress site/blog she also included this one on Social Media in simple terms – I loved it, so I’m posting it here for your enjoyment.

Perry Belcher put out this great YouTube video on the various social media. He aptly uses the metaphor of a party to explain how to use these wonderful virtual ‘piazzas’ to socialize. He then points out how ‘the landscape is changing’ – that now even internet marketers need to do this.

He also shows the link between social media & a blog and highlights that this ‘new landscape’ we live in encourages this friendly, helping-hand attitude. But, as Perry reminds us these social media are just a virtual extension of the traditional ways many professions have always done business – by socializing.

So join the party and enjoy Perry’s video!

Any questions or comments – please feel free to post them in the comment box.
